WHO WE ARE

Paola Calvo & Patrick Jasim

TUMULT noun [ C or U ]  formal

US   /ˈtuː.mʌlt/

TUMULT is a duo of directors and cinematographers based in Berlin and Madrid, comprised of Paola Calvo and Patrick Jasim. Both honed their skills as cinematographers for feature films before uniting to co-direct. Their debut feature-length documentary, “LUCHADORAS,” which showcases feminist wrestlers in Mexico, celebrated its world premiere at the prestigious SXSW festival and had its theatrical release earlier this year. It garnered numerous awards at festivals like TIFF, SEMINCI, Nottingham, and the HOF film festival. As they gear up for their second feature film, they have also begun to venture into short-form projects, always maintaining their signature documentary aesthetic at the forefront.

Paola is a passionate storyteller. She zeroes in on crafting intimate spaces and capturing their essence in moving images. She has a knack for turning real-life moments into something more emotional, rhythmic, and playful. Through her lens, everyday people transform into heroes.

Patrick, on the other hand, focuses on conceptual ideas and aims to build a cinematic world through highly atmospheric imagery that doesn’t need any explanation but immediately pulls you in.

Together, they craft films that feel spontaneous and authentic. They have a unique ability to set a mood that puts people at ease, encouraging genuine performances in front of the camera and infusing all their projects with that special touch of humanity. Drawing inspiration from their Latin American and Arabic roots, empowerment stands as a dominant theme in their work: Real people, powerful emotions, cinematic camerawork and vibrant colors set the tone.
